Global Warming Effects on Ice

Glaciers cover around 10% of the present day land surface which can be seen in the map.

Almost 90% of the Earth’s land mass can be found in Antarctica, whilst Greenland occupies the other 10%. Remember that the Arctic is not a land surface, so these figures do not incorporate this area.

Many glaciers are seeing signs of retreat which can be catastrophic. This BBC news article from 21 st April, 2005 highlights the rate of melt found at the Sheldon glacier. Click here to read the BBC News Article

The shrinkage of ice can lead to many implications for wildlife and ecosystems, along with sea level change and associated climate change.
